This is a definite modern witchy twist to the Romeo and Juliet
tale, with the Fairweather and Blackwood covens being in a lifelong feud. Naturally
they are forbidden to be together and naturally they are completely in love. I
would have loved to read how their love story began and unfolded, from start to,
blow up to, end. But just as the story line goes, you always want what you can’t
have.
I was drawn in from the very start of this book. I loved the
banter between Julia and her mother during the Uber ride and would have loved
to see more of the driver that Julia has and then Roman has later on.
I’ve read a lot of reviews and there are a lot of people that
felt as if Julia’s character was weak for running away, but I feel as if she
wasn’t running away so much as finding herself, centering herself and growing
as a person. She is however torn between what she wants and duty to her family,
that was a struggle that I also understood and sympathized with. Although if we
had been given the opportunity to start earlier in these characters lives than
it would have easier to relate to her need to find herself, due to the pressure
put on her by her family. Then there is Roman, he’s a dark and sexy character
with complicated emotions. I for one LOVED his character, he stays true to himself
the entire time and doesn’t make excuses for his behavior and he keeps pushing
Julia and do the same. He was appropriately chastising, loving and sexually
charged as he needed to be, and I loved every steamy second of it!
I really did love the drama, deception, love, betrayal, fear,
family bonds, twists and turns and magic this adventure had. You really can't
help who you fall in love with and how it will change your life. This story
really has it all, friends/family who can’t be trusted, secret plots, set ups,
hostile take overs, magic spells, steamy sex scenes and a genuine heartfelt
love story. I have always been a fan of Rebecca Hamilton, her writing and her
as a person, she is a down to earth woman and mother and a creative and
talented writer and artist. I was skeptical about reading something that was collaborated
with another author, especially one I had never previously read but Conner
Kressley and Rebecca Hamilton worked really well together, it’s obvious that
they both really know how to write this genre and they meshed their work so
well together that you could hardly tell it was written by two separate writers.
They kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and turning the pages so
quickly that I finished the book in under just five hours.
